The AAOF has defined seven Award Program priority areas:

- Gifts in support of orthodontic education
The funds necessary for these awards are the result of the Foundation's endowment fundraising campaign, Continued Commitment to the Specialty.®
2010 Awards Program At the February Board meeting the Board of Directors made some difficult decisions due to the prevailing economic climate, which resulted in a funding program of only 10 Orthodontic Faculty Development Fellowship Awards (OFDFA).

The Shepard Award designation is given annually to the most meritorious Orthodontic Faculty Development Fellowship Award.
Funding for 2011 For 2011, the Directors approved the following:

Orthodontic Faculty Development Fellowship Awards (OFDFA) consisting of an aggregate of $150,000 to fund ten one-year ($15,000) awards, i.e., three-year funding option is not offered in 2011.

Educational Innovation Award in 2011 funding the maximum amount of $30,000.

Funding for the existing Collections Project will continue, i.e., no new or additional proposals will be considered.
2011 Awards Materials Announcements
Jarabak Award Annually, the AAOF BOD selects the recipient(s) of the Jarabak Award from nominations received from AAO Constituent Societies. Nominations are requested no later than February 1 of the year preceding the year, i.e., nominations for the 2011 Jarabak Award are to be received by the AAOF by February 1, 2010. In years divisible by three (e.g., 2010) the Jarabak Award is given to citizens of countries other than the United States or Canada. Click Here for Jarabak Award criteria. Salzmann Lecture
Annually the AAOF Board determines the Salzmann Lecturer from the nomination(s) received by the individual who will serve as AAO President for that year's AAO Annual Session. Planning and Awards Review Committee (PARC)
While keeping the ultimate fiduciary responsibility of the Awards Program, the Foundation Board has delegated to the Planning and Awards Review Committee (PARC) the responsibility of reviewing the various applications and recommending which are to be funded, as well as making recommendations about any alterations in the Foundation's Awards Program.
History of the AAOF Awards Program Since 1994, the AAOF Awards Program has contributed the following to orthodontic education and research:

$6.9 million in funding, primarily in support of Junior Faculty, including:
- 135 Fellowship Awards
- 148 Research Awards

Over 1,000 Gifts in Support of orthodontic residencies. At the 70 graduate orthodontic residency programs in the US and Canada, there are 22 Department Chairs and/or Program Directors who have been directly supported by the AAOF early in their academic careers.

80% of Junior Faculty supported by the AAOF remain in full-time academics after five years.

On the AAOF web site, there are Final Reports from 250 peer-reviewed, funded proposals.
