The AAO Foundation has defined seven Award Program priority areas-biomedical research awards, orthodontic faculty development fellowship awards, center awards, educational innovation awards, program awards, research aid awards, and gifts in support of orthodontic education-designed to benefit the specialty of orthodontics, its practitioners and the patients it serves. The funds necessary for these awards are the result of the Foundation's endowment campaign, A CASE FOR THE FUTURE.

Jarabak Award and Salzmann Lecture

Jarabak Award

Annually, the AAOF BOD selects the recipient(s) of the Jarabak Award from nominations received from AAO Constituent Societies.  Nominations are requested no later than February 1 of the year preceding the year, i.e., nominations for the 2009 Jarabak Award are to be received by the AAOF by February 1, 2008. In years divisible by three (e.g., 2010) the Jarabak Award is given to citizens of countries other than the United States or Canada.  Click Here for Jarabak Award criteria.  Click Here for a listing of those persons selected as Jarabak Award recipients.

Salzmann Lecture

Annually the AAOF BOD determines the Salzmann Lecturer from nomination(s) received by the individual who will serve as AAO President for that year’s AAO Annual Session.  The AAO Foundation President introduces the Salzmann Lecturer.  Click Here for a listing of those persons selected as Salzmann Lecturers.

2009 Awards

At the March 2008 meeting of the AAOF BOD, the Directors approved the following as the 2009-2010 Awards Program:

  • Aggregate of $450,000
  • Post-doctoral Fellowship Awards, Orthodontic Faculty Development Fellowship Awards, and Biomedical Research Awards – according to the number and quality of proposals.
  • Center Award/Planning Grant: Collections – $80,000, assuming the previously supported proposal applies for a second round of funding and demonstrates sufficient progress to warrant additional support.
  • Call for Proposal: Access to Care – dollar amount to be determined, e.g., funding may be available through AAO.

PLANNING AND AWARDS REVIEW COMMITTEE (PARC)

While keeping the ultimate fiduciary responsibility of the Awards Program, the Foundation Board has delegated to the Planning and Awards Review Committee (PARC) the responsibility of reviewing the various applications and recommending which are to be funded, as well as making recommendations about any alterations in the Foundation's Awards Program.

PARC is composed of eight voting members and one nonvoting member. Those selected to be voting members of PARC are selected by the AAOF BOD from recommendations originating from the AAO BOT (through both the AAO COE and AAO COSA), PARC, and from the AAOF Board itself.  Individuals recommended by either council and nominated by the AAO BOT need not be members of either council.  Typically, PARC members serve a maximum of two three-year terms.  The Chair and Vice Chair of PARC are both determined by the AAOF BOD.  The nonvoting member of PARC, who is designated the AAOF Board Liaison to PARC, is selected by the AAOF BOD from among Foundation Directors.

PARC membership 2007-2008 is Stephanos Kyrkanides (NESO/NY – Chair), Leslie Will (MASO/MA – Vice Chair), Stephen J. Lindauer (SAO/VA), Hyun-Duk Nah (MASO/PA), Emile Rosseuw (SWSO/TX), Kirt Simmons (SWSO/AR), Thomas E. Southard (MSO/IA), and Timothy Wheeler (SAO/FL).  Jeffrey Cavanaugh (MSO/MO) continues to serve as Board Liaison to PARC.

Amending the Awards Program:  The AAOF BOD has spent a great deal of time and energy establishing an Awards Program which is in the best interest of the specialty, its members, and the patients served.  Even so, the Board welcomes the suggestions of individual AAO members, the AAO BOT, the AAO HOD, and others regarding its Awards Process.

All such suggestions (in writing, please) will be referred to PARC for their consideration and recommendations, and the AAOF BOD, as the body with the ultimate fiduciary responsibility, will make the final determination regarding any and all suggestions.
