OUR MISSION

The mission of the AAO Foundation is to advance the orthodontic specialty by supporting quality education and research that leads to excellence in patient care, and by promoting orthodontic charitable giving.

2 | YEAR IN REVIEW 2023

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

I am honored to report that the AAO Foundation remained focused on top priorities including research, education, and charitable giving through its program support in 2023.

The AAOF Board of Directors approved $684,981 in support for 29 cuttingedge research projects through the Awards Program as recommended by the Planning and Awards Review Committee (PARC).

We were thrilled to meet our donors, corporate partners, residents and AAO members at the Annual Session in Chicago, Illinois. Over 430 residents were introduced to the work of the AAOF at our booth in the

exhibit hall as they became eligible for the Fred A. Garrett Resident Education Program, which provided an incentive of $400 to offset expenses for them to attend this valuable conference. We hosted our second Donor Appreciation Cocktail Reception and raised a glass to our supporters. The annual AAO Foundation Breakfast was a sold-out event! We recognized several award recipients, including the 2023 Eugene and Pauline Blair Distinguished Service Award presented to the Schulman Group. Dr. Aron Dellinger received the 2023 Raymond George, Sr. Award recipient for Outstanding Donated Orthodontic Service.

In July, we hosted the Graduate Orthodontic Residency Program (GORP) at the AAO Headquarters in St. Louis where we sponsored this special night, along with AAO.

The newest program of the AAOF, Donated Orthodontic Services (DOS) was rebranded this year to Gifted Smiles; A Charitable Orthodontic Program of the AAOF. The excitement continues to grow around this program that provides orthodontic treatment for children who lack access to care due to financial challenges.

The AAOF welcomed new Vice President, Brett Schott in early 2024. Brett brings nearly 30 years of experience in fundraising, administration, and community engagement. With previous experience at leading nonprofit organizations as well as higher education, Brett brings a keen interest in helping promote the work of the members of AAO and the specialty of orthodontics.

The Foundation will induct Dr. Lili Horton as President at the conclusion of Annual Session in May 2024. Under her leadership, the Foundation will thrive as we continue to execute our mission.

As my time as President of the AAO Foundation Board of Directors ends, I invite you to continue supporting the mission and work of the Foundation and ensure that the specialty continues well into the future.

AWARD WINNER SPOTLIGHT

2023 FRED AND DIANNE GARRETT BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH AWARD

Project Title: The impact of TMJ mechanobehavior on outcomes of mandibular advancement surgery

Dr. Laura Iwasaki is a professor in the Division of Orthodontics and Chair of the Department of Oral and Craniofacial Sciences at OHSU School of Dentistry, with a volunteer appointment in the Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences, University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine.

This project will use clinical tools previously developed by our research team to identify factors that may contribute to the loss of mandibular condylar structure (resorption) following orthognathic surgery to advance the mandible. Specifically, we will combine individual-specific information about jaw mechanics and behaviors plus psychosocial and physiological conditions to compare these before and after surgery. In particular, how much and how often the jaw joint is loaded (TMJ mechanobehavior) will be measured before and after surgery to predict the likelihood of post-surgical loss of jaw joint structure (TMJ degenerative change).

How orthodontic education will benefit

The foundational information to be gathered will be important for future risk stratification of patients who are to undergo orthognathic surgery regarding the potential for post-surgical sideeffects such as condylar resorption. These outcomes will also be the basis for improved protocols which reduce the likelihood of post-surgical loss of mandibular condylar structure. These will hopefully be useful concepts that will contribute positively to improved orthodontic education. For example, the outcomes of the proposed research will provide simplified means of estimating TMJ joint loads and stress-concentration based on condyle and jaw muscle geometries, respectively, that are not currently included in clinical cephalometric analyses.

Project Description

BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH AWARD

Droplet aerosolization during specific orthodontic procedures has been a prime concern in the orthodontic community since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Large oral and nasal spray blooms are generated, which puts the orthodontic personnel at risk of contracting microbial infections carried out by related aerosols. This fact generated a strong interest in better understanding the nature of bioaerosol exposure in an orthodontic practice. Since aerosols remain in circulation for a significant amount of time after the termination of the orthodontic procedure, other patients and the dental staff can be at risk of developing various illnesses based on the biological content of the circulating aerosols. While oral biomass dispersion is reduced through saliva ejectors, high-volume suctions, and mouthwashes, remaining circulating aerosols still contain significant microbial content from the nose, currently understood to be more COVID-19 infectious than salivary particles. This proposal aims to test the nasal bioaerosols produced during specific orthodontic aerosolgenerating procedures. We hypothesize that some orthodontic visits generate bioaerosol sprays (droplets and aerosols) from the nose and the saliva, which could be mitigated by antimicrobial nasal sprays and extra-oral aerosol capture devices.

How orthodontic education will benefit

An improved understanding of the physical characteristics of the generated spray, their biological origin, how far they travel, and how to best mitigate them to assess if additional infection control procedures are needed when providing orthodontic aerosol-generating procedures.

Importance of AAOF Funding

Research funding for orthodontic projects is scarce at national and international levels. The AAOF support is invaluable for orthodontically meaningful research projects that benefit our members and communities. I have been so lucky to receive seven AAOF-funded awards during my academic career. What I have accomplished has undoubtedly been supported by the AAOF.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION

With support from the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (AAOF), nine of the eleven known collections of longitudinal craniofacial growth records in the United States and Canada have joined together to create this web site and its underlying numerical database. Our purpose is to make representative materials from the participating collections available for viewing and further investigation by clinicians, craniofacial investigators, students of human growth, and interested members of the public.

These collections represent the work of hundreds of investigators. They have been gathered, cataloged, and studied over a period

Now, by merging data from the collections, we hope to make possible further collaborative studies that will enrich and refine our knowledge of craniofacial growth in untreated children and adolescents.

CRANIOFACIAL GROWTH LEGACY COLLECTION PROJECT

Presently available on the site are more than 13,000 digital images including 8,700 lateral cephalograms and over 3,000 frontal (PA) cephalograms generated at different ages from 704 cases, gathered from 9 different collections. Summary statistics on case distribution by sex/ gender, age and Angle Class may be found by clicking on “ Statistics” in the About menu.

LET’S BE FRIENDS!

Follow AAOF in social media and help us spread the word.

“ The Keystone Society is an estate planning opportunity. I’m at the end of my career and I consider the practice of orthodontics to be the greatest business practice opportunity anybody could ever want. So therefore, I’m at a stage where I look back and say how wonderful it was, what orthodontics was able to do for me personally. At this stage you have choices about how you want to give back, and one of them certainly would be to give back to your profession. As somebody writing my estate, I want to make sure my monies go directly to what is important to me. The one place I know for sure that will happen is with the AAO Foundation.”

GRATEFUL PATIENTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Did you know, when you have a patient whose life is made better because of your commitment to their orthodontic health, you can encourage them to give to AAOF in your honor through our Grateful Patient Program? Not only do they receive the tax deduction for their donation, but you receive the credit with AAOF for that donation, which will advance you in our giving level benefits and recognition. With donations like these, AAOF can continue funding research and education that will lead to increased excellence in patient care in the future.

For more information about this program, and a printable form to offer your patients, visit www.aaofoundation.net/ways-to-give and select Grateful Patient Form.

The AAO Foundation Board of Directors wishes to express appreciation and gratitude to those who have completed the pledges they committed as orthodontic residents to become members of the Vanguard Society. “The Vanguard Society is a way for me to give back to the AAOF for all that it has done for me. The AAO Foundation has consistently given to me throughout my residency by funding conferences and breaking down financial barriers to attend these conferences. This has allowed me to attend incredible lectures, listen to the top speakers, and network. Further, the AAOF helps fund research projects for residents and well beyond. For me, pledging to the Vanguard Society acknowledges the mission of the AAOF to advance our orthodontic specialty and further propel residents to achieve their goals.”

DISASTER RELIEF PROGRAM

WHAT IS THE DISASTER

RELIEF FUND?

Any AAO member whose orthodontic practice is damaged by a natural disaster may apply to the AAO Disaster Relief Fund for a grant (up to $5,000) to assist in restoring, repairing, or reconstructing a practice facility owned by the applicant, or the dental equipment and supplies therein. Replacement of lost income from practice interruption is not an eligible qualification for assistance.

WHY CONTRIBUTE TO THIS FUND?

Damages from a natural disaster can create a serious financial hardship and sometime other sources of adequate funding are not available.

WHO WE SERVE

Applicants must meet the requirements described in the Rules for Disaster Assistance Program and all applicants should familiarize themselves with those rules prior to completing the application. VOLUNTEERING YOUR SPECIALTY

GIFTED SMILES, Orthodontic Services (DOS) is a program of the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (AAOF) that provides a conduit to connect children lacking access to care with orthodontic treatment. Our objective is to match AAO members with children in need in their own communities. AAOF has recently begun partnerships with the residency program clinics at 12 universities, with A.T. Still being the first to commit. Several other clinic partnerships are pending, with our goal being every resident clinic donating cases through Gifted Smiles.

“This note is to express my sincerest thanks for assisting my son to receive his braces! He has asked me about a thousand times today if I like them and he is showing everyone he sees! You have changed his world! I am amazed at how easily you got them on and how wonderful and professional you all have been to us. You are a class act group and we are so proud to be with you on the braces journey for our family! Smiles for your day!”
