IRA Charitable Giving

The American Association of Orthodontists Foundation accepts charitable giving directly from your IRA. We appreciate your generosity. The information below contains background on charitable giving made from an IRA as well as how you can direct your donation within the foundation to continue to impact the orthodontic specialty.

Background on giving from your IRA

If you are 70½ years of age or older, you can take tax-free withdrawals from your IRA if the money goes directly to a charity. Charitable gifts made directly from your IRA will count towards your required minimum distribution for the next year. While your gift cannot be claimed as a tax deduction, IRA withdrawals donated directly to charity are not counted as income so you will not owe income tax on the withdrawal.

Donors are limited to a maximum of $100,000 in any one year as an IRA charitable distribution, however there is no requirement that the entire amount be made in one transfer or that the entire amount go to a single qualified charitable organization. You can request multiple direct transfers from their IRA to qualified charities in a year, but only $100,000 will be excluded from income as an IRA qualified charitable distribution. To make a qualified charitable distribution, you must instruct your IRA trustee to make the contribution directly to an eligible charitable organization.

If you would like to designate your donation, please communicate your wishes with the foundation or your IRA trustee so it can be noted when a donation is made.

The mission of the AAO Foundation is to advance the orthodontic specialty by supporting quality education and research that leaders to excellence in patient care. Foundation funding ensures the future viability of the specialty by investing in the next generation of educators and researchers. Since 1994, the AAO Foundation Awards Program has provided over $13.1 million in funding over 500 fellowship and research awards. The foundation would like to continue this work and appreciates the continued support of our donors to do so.
