AAOSI SUPPORTS CRANIOFACIAL GROWTH LEGACY PROJECT THROUGH MATCHING CAMPAIGN

St. Louis, Missouri – The American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (AAOF) was recently honored with a Silver Award from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) in recognition of their Donated Orthodontic Services (DOS) program, which seeks to create opportunities for children to have access to professional orthodontic intervention through a volunteer network.

Since its inception more than a decade ago, DOS has grown into a national program with volunteer orthodontists across the country. DOS volunteers are members of the American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) who desire to give back to their community through their profession.

The AAOF was among 48 associations recognized by the ASAE in 2022 for going above and beyond its everyday mission to undertake initiatives with a far-reaching benefit. The ASAE is comprised of American associations that contribute directly to U.S. economy and improve lives through services that support communities.

According to Jackie Bode, AAOF senior vice president, all approved DOS applicants are 18 years-of-age or younger, recommended by their dentist and come from a family with an income under 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.

“Receiving this award is particularly significant because it acknowledges the impact our program is making in both the lives of children and the orthodontic profession,” said Bode.

Today, the DOS program has provided orthodontic treatment for over 1,000 children from families with a financial need - during a critical time in their development where bullying and self-esteem issues are prevalent.

“Orthodontists are generous people who want to make a difference but identifying kids in need of donated treatment can be difficult. The DOS program screens the patient and then refers them to my office. As a DOS volunteer, I can give back to my profession and serve kids who couldn’t otherwise afford care,” said DOS committee chair, Dr. Spencer Pope.
